Info about Heidelberg
Heidelberg attracts visitors with its green landscape, the longest shopping street in Europe and its legendary castle. So which sights should you definitely not miss on your JGA visit?
Heidelberg Castle and Castle Gardens
Heidelberg became internationally famous for its ruins, which can be seen from afar. Because Heidelberg Castle is the largest and also the "most famous ruin in Germany". After its destruction at the end of the 17th century, the castle was also popular with the Romantics due to its architecture and was depicted in art several times.
Time for a JGA group photo? Then you shouldn't skip the castle garden, as it leads you along the impressive ruins to the Scheffel Terraces. Here, hidden among the trees, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the castle and the city in the background.
Old Bridge Heidelberg and Marstall
The Old Bridge over the Neckar has characterised the cityscape since 1788 and connects the old town with the banks of the Neuenheim district. It is made of sandstone and merges into a bridge gate with two towers at the southern end. And don't forget: Take a photo of the monkey statue on the bridge.
Or how about a walk along the Neckar? This is one of the few medieval buildings in Heidelberg and is located on the banks of the river. During a visit, you can wander around the thick walls and stop off at the Marstallcafé.
Heiliggeistkirche and Heidelberg market square
The red sandstone Heiliggeistkirche towers over Heidelberg's Old Town. It is also architecturally impressive with its Gothic, light-flooded hall and baroque roof. Around the corner you will also find the Mother of God Fountain, on which there is a copy of the statue of the Kornmarkt Madonna with a golden crown of rays.
Traders meet on Heidelberg's market square and set up their stalls surrounded by colourful houses. Heidelberg is one of the few German cities that was not destroyed in the Second World War, which is why the city centre offers a glimpse into the past. The baroque town hall is also located directly on the market square and can be admired while you enjoy a refreshment in the pubs.
