Freiburg Cathedral and Cathedral Market

Freiburg Cathedral is the city's landmark and has been impressing its visitors since it was built in the 13th century. The architecture combines elements of the Romanesque, Gothic and late Gothic periods, while the church tower was long officially known as the most beautiful in the world.

The Minster Market is located directly in front of the cathedral, nestled between the colourful houses. Here you'll find everything your heart desires, from handicrafts to culinary delights. Don't miss the cheesecake, which is legendary in Freiburg.

With its red façade, it cannot be overlooked on Münsterplatz: The Historic Merchant's House dates back to the 14th century and was used for customs and market administration. The statues and ornaments are painted gold.

Freiburger Bächle and Schwabentor

They are simply part of Freiburg's cityscape: The Freiburger Bächle (brooks) stretch across the old town with a total length of 15.9 kilometres. the water of the Dreisam ripples pleasantly through the city and accompanies you on your walks.

The Schwabentor is the medieval attraction in Freiburg. It was originally built as part of the city wall and rebuilt several times over the centuries. Today it is used for tram line 1, which runs through the gate out of town. You will also find a plaque on the way to the Schwabentor that commemorates the burning of three women as witches.

Schlossberg

Fancy a stroll? The Schlossberg can be reached directly from the old town on foot or by Schlossbergbahn. If you manage to climb the tower, you will be rewarded with a view over the whole of Freiburg. In the background of Freiburg Cathedral you can see vineyards and forests, a dreamlike sight after a successful day.
