Birmingham is a large city with a population of around 1 142 000 in the West Midlands of England. Although the area already held an important position in the Roman Empire, Birmingham only regained importance within the kingdom when the city became the centre of metalworking in the 15th century. Birmingham benefited immensely from the developments of the Industrial Revolution and grew to become the second largest city in the country by 1850. Today, the "City of a thousand trades" is still the hub of British metalworking, but has also developed into a service city over the years.

Art and culture

As an industrial city, Birmingham made a rather dull impression for a long time - but that has changed in recent years.
