Info about Dortmund
It's not just football fans who get their money's worth in Dortmund. What sights should you not miss on your stag party in the green city in North Rhine-Westphalia?
Alter Markt and Westenhellweg
The Old Market has its origins in the 9th century and served as a trading place for several centuries. In addition, the oldest stone town hall in the world stood on the market until 1955, but it had to be demolished due to damage caused by the Second World War. In addition to numerous historic buildings, new façades can be seen that give the market square a modern touch.
Westenhellweg is one of the most popular shopping streets in Germany. Shops, restaurants, bars - here you'll find everything you need for a successful JGA. The name of the street can be traced back to the medieval "Hellweg", which served as an army and trade route and ended at the market.
Petri Church
St. Peter's Church is a high Gothic church in the style of the hall churches from Westphalia. It is one of the city's landmarks and has a 105-metre tower that does not seem to rise in proportion to the rest of the church. The winged altar inside is called the "golden wonder of Westphalia". Together with the Reinoldikirche, the Petrikirche is one of the oldest buildings in Dortmund.
Dortmund U
If you're craving a fresh beer, the Dortmunder U is the place to be. The former brewery building of the Dortmunder Union Brauerei is now used as an art building and can be recognised from afar by its "U" sign. In addition to a museum, a restaurant and a view over the city await you.
Friedensplatz and old town house
Among other things, Dortmund's city hall and town hall are located on Friedensplatz, while the Stadtgarten is just around the corner. In addition, the square was originally called Neuer Markt and has become a venue for events. Celebrations, festivals and even demonstrations take place here at the foot of the Peace Column.
The Old Town House was also not spared by the Second World War, but it was rebuilt and now shines in the old splendour of the Neo-Renaissance in Kleppingstraße. The representation of the coat of arms on the gable, which unites the eight Hanseatic cities, is striking.
