Dutch metropolis
With about 655,000 inhabitants, Rotterdam is the second largest city in the Netherlands after Amsterdam. The city has the largest seaport in Europe and is therefore an important transport hub for freight traffic. Find out what you can experience on your JGA in Rotterdam here.
Markthal Rotterdam is a horseshoe-shaped market hall completed in 2014. Architecturally, it features an oversized ceiling mural depicting a mix of fruits in bright colours. The market hall has a mix of gourmet shops, shopping outlets and restaurants.
Euromast Tower and the Old Port
The Euromast Tower was built in 1960 on the occasion of the Floriade, with an originally planned height of 101 m. In 1970, however, it was increased by a further 84 m. The Euromast Tower is located in the heart of the city. From the tower you get a view of the entire city and, in good weather, you can see up to 30 km away. There is a panorama restaurant in the middle of the tower.
At the Old Port you can see the historic ships of the Rotterdam Port Museum and a small shipyard where old ships and boats are restored. In the evening, the Old Port becomes Rotterdam's nightlife district.
Witte de Withstraat
Witte de Withstraat is the artistic street of Rotterdam. It connects the Maritime Museum with the Museum Park. Here you will not only find alternative boutiques, restaurants, pubs and changing exhibitions, but also lots of creative shops. The street attracts with decoration shops and trendy pubs, here you are sure to find something to experience.
The Laurenskerk
The Laurenskerk is the only surviving building from the Middle Ages and was built between 1449 and 1525. The church was badly damaged in the bombings of 1940, but was rebuilt. Today you can marvel at the doll's houses, the carillon and the four huge organs inside.
Nederlands Fotomuseum
The Nederlands Fotomuseum, the photography museum in Rotterdam, displays over a century of Dutch photography history and photographs of all kinds, from glass negatives to autochrome plates. There are changing exhibitions of well-known and lesser-known artists to see.
