Info about Osnabrück
City of peace with Romanesque cathedral
Osnabrück was the scene of the Thirty Years' War in 1648, when peace was signed between Westphalia and Sweden. This is why the city still bears the nickname "City of Peace" today. Which sights are part of your JGA?
The Romanesque cathedral of St Peter has its origins in the 12th century, when Emperor Charlemagne had the cathedral built. Inside you can marvel at a bronze baptismal font, which was donated around 1225, and the triumphal cross. The nave is embellished with 12 sculptures from the 16th century.
Gothic town hall and elegant St Mary's Church
The town hall was built between 1487 and 1512 in the late Gothic style. Several figures can be seen on the façade, including one depicting Emperor Charlemagne, which were added in the late 19th century. The town hall is one of the most historic in Germany, as the "Peace of Westphalia" was signed in the Peace Hall in 1648.
The civic fountain is located on the Platz des westfälischen Friedens directly in front of the town hall and depicts the history of Osnabrück. The sculptures were designed by Hans Gerd Ruwe and depict Emperor Frederick Barbarossa reading a scroll next to a lion.
St Mary's is a late Gothic hall church whose construction began in the 13th century. The figures of the ten virgins from the New Testament, which are attached to the bridal portal, are impressive. On the left are the five wise virgins and on the right the five foolish virgins. The winged altar of the church was designed in Antwerp in 1520.
Osnabrück Castle and Heger Tor
The baroque palace was commissioned by Duke Ernst August in 1648 to celebrate peace. After Ernst August's last son died in 1728, the palace stood empty until the Second World War, when it was used as a prison. Today, the administration of the University of Osnabrück is located inside.
The Heger Tor is a neoclassical round gate in the medieval city wall, which was erected in 1817 as a memorial to the fallen soldiers at Waterloo. The gate was inspired by the Arch of Titus in Rome. If you're looking for restaurants and pubs, you've come to the right place in the neighbouring Heger Tor district.
