Football, Oktoberfest and history await you in the green capital of Bavaria. Which sights should definitely be on your JGA bucket list?
Frauenkirche and Marienplatz
The Frauenkirche has stood on Frauenplatz square for more than 500 years and is the city's landmark. The late Gothic brick building is both a cathedral and a parish church. There are several legends surrounding the footprint, the devil's footprint, as it is said that the devil once tried to enter the church and destroy it.
Marienplatz is the centre of the action. Here you are surrounded by historic buildings such as the New Town Hall and the Old Town Hall. Cafés, restaurants and snack bars line the streets, where the carillon can be heard between 11 and 12 noon. Marienplatz is often referred to as the "largest village in Germany".
If you're looking forward to shopping, Kaufinger Straße is the place for you. Here you can shop to your heart's content while watching the street performers.
Viktualienmarkt and St Peter's Church
The Viktualienmarkt is an open food market. As you stroll around, you'll find local specialities and culinary adventures from all over the world. Afterwards, you can toast your JGA in one of the beer gardens.
St Peter's Church was rebuilt after the Second World War and stands on the site of its predecessors. The earliest building dates back to the 13th century. The tower of St Peter's Church is popularly called Alter Peter by the people of Munich.
English Garden and Court Garden
The English Garden is located in the north-east of the city and forms the southern part of one of the largest parks in the world. As you stroll around, you will find impressive buildings such as the Chinese Tower, the Japanese Teahouse and the Monopteros, the temple of columns.
The courtyard garden dates back to the 16th century and was built under Duke Albrecht of Bavaria. The park consists of several inner courtyards and impressive statues such as Diana at the Temple of Diana. In the baroque gardens, you can listen to the splashing of the fountains, relax in the sun or simply unwind in the sea of flowers.
