Marseille - The gateway to the Mediterranean

Marseille is the second largest city in France and is located in the south of the country. The former seafaring city is also known as the "Gateway to the Mediterranean" and was already an important trading port in ancient times. Marseille was founded around 600 BC, making it the oldest city in France. In 2013, Marseille was the European Capital of Culture.

The Old Harbour, Le Vieux Port, is the perfect starting point for your city rally - it is considered one of the oldest harbours in the world. Today, you can stroll along the promenade, sit down in one of the many cafés and restaurants and marvel at both historic buildings and impressive yachts. Up to 3500 boats can anchor at the Old Harbour!

Notre-Dame de la Garde

From the cafés on the north side of the harbour, you have a good view of Notre-Dame de la Garde. The majestic pilgrimage church is the city's landmark and sits imposingly on a hill, from where you can also enjoy an excellent view of Marseille. The monumental Cathédrale de la Major, seat of the Archbishop of Marseille, is also well worth a visit.

Football fans can visit the "Stade Vélodrome" football stadium, home of the Olympique Marseille football club, from the old harbour. Just behind the old harbour is the Quartier Le Panier, Marseille's oldest district. This idyllic, picturesque neighbourhood is characterised by its winding alleyways and narrow houses. Shopping fans will also get their money's worth, as there are all kinds of boutiques and studios here.

Palais Longchamp

The Palais Longchamp, which is located in Longchamp Park, is also impressive. The beautiful building itself is worth a visit, but it also houses two museums: the Natural History Museum and the Musée des Beaux-Art. In the bay of Marseille is the Château d'If fortress, a setting for the famous novel "The Count of Monte Cristo" by Alexandre Dumas.

Don't forget to try the typical Marseille specialities such as bouillabaisse (a famous fish soup) and the famous aniseed schnapps pastis.
