Info about Mainz
Mainz is often referred to as the wine capital of Germany and attracts visitors with its small wine taverns, vinotheques and romantic bars. Let's go on a stag party in dreamy Mainz, which was founded by the Romans.
Mainz Cathedral and market
Mainz Cathedral is an impressive sandstone building in the heart of the city centre. The façade is reminiscent of a medieval cathedral and combines Romanesque elements with a Gothic and Baroque roof. Inside is the largest collection of funerary monuments from the Holy Roman Empire.
Like the cathedral, the market has its origins in the 10th century. Between the stalls and the hustle and bustle of the city, you will find the market fountain, an elaborately decorated fountain from the Renaissance, as well as the Heunensäule, a column made of sandstone that was actually intended for the construction of the cathedral.
Gutenberg Museum
The Gutenberg Museum is located in the Renaissance building "Zum Römischen Kaiser" and exhibits some of the few remaining copies of the Gutenberg Bible. The exhibits also include the oldest known piece of Japanese block printing.
St Stephen's and Kirschplatz
St Stephen's is slightly higher than the rest of the old town and can be seen from afar. The church was founded in 990 and impresses visitors with its Gothic interior. The windows were given a new design by Marc Chagall between 1978 and 1985.
Kirschplatz is often described as the most beautiful place in Mainz and was laid out in the early 14th century. It is surrounded by half-timbered houses and small restaurants where you can enjoy the perfect beer in the sunshine.
Rhine bank, wooden tower and iron tower
If you want to relax, head towards the banks of the Rhine. You can enjoy the air along the rippling water, whether it's summer or winter. In the warmer months, you'll find beer gardens and vineyards where you can toast to your JGA to your heart's content.
The wooden tower and the iron tower were once part of the city wall and can be admired today at a distance of around one hundred metres. Both were built in the 12th century and were given their striking façades during the Gothic period.
