Info about Lyon
The French city of Lyon
Enjoy the French way of life in Lyon! With over 500,000 inhabitants, Lyon is the third largest city in France after Paris and Marseille and has a lot to offer in terms of both history and cuisine. The former capital of Gaul is now also considered the capital of French cuisine and with more than 4,000 restaurants, there is something for every taste. Find out what you can experience in Lyon here.
The city was founded by the Romans in 43 BC and its historic centre and part of the peninsula have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998. This also includes the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, which is enthroned on the summit of Mount Fourviére and whose magnificent interior is well worth a visit. You also have a good view of the city from the viewing platform there.
The Roman influence can also still be admired on the Fouviére, as two amphitheatres have been carved into the mountain here. Concerts and theatre performances often take place in this impressive setting in summer.
The Place Bellecour
Stroll across Place Bellecour, one of the largest squares in France, and visit the Hôtel de Ville, Lyon's town hall, which is characterised by its impressive architecture. Next to it is the Opéra de Lyon, one of the most important opera houses in France. But Lyon's nightlife should not go unmentioned either. The Croix-Russe neighbourhood in particular offers a wide range of bars and clubs.
Old town Vieux Lyon
The old town, Vieux Lyon, impresses with its Renaissance charm, its medieval alleyways and the famous traboules (hidden alleyways and passages). Here you will find some pretty little shops that invite you to browse and shop, as well as many of the city's numerous restaurants. Lyon's culinary reputation dates back to ancient times. The city was considered a monopoly in the wine trade. In the bouchons, Lyon's bistros, you can enjoy traditional Lyon specialities such as Lyon salad (a leaf salad with smoked bacon) or the "Tarte aux Pralines" (a sugared almond tart).
But it's not just traditional dishes that can be found on the city's countless menus. Lyon's cuisine is also characterised by cosmopolitanism and creativity, which is why you will also find many international influences. From Michelin-starred cuisine to street food - there's something for every taste!
