Info about Constance
Constance is known for its proximity to Switzerland, but the city also impresses visitors with its music scene and theatres. Here are the best sights that should not be missed on a JGA excursion.
Old Town Constance
The old town is a paradise for walkers. Small alleyways, colourful houses and buildings from the Middle Ages await you here in the oldest district of Niederburg. The neighbourhood is located on the southern side of the Rhine and is therefore actually in Switzerland. On the other side of the Old Rhine Bridge, Conrad-Gröber-Straße features several Art Nouveau buildings.
Constance Town Hall
The Constance Town Hall was built in the 16th century as a guild house and today serves as the seat of the city administration. The three archways are flanked by towers on the left and right and support the Venetian-style paintings.
Constance Minster
Constance Minster stands out from the sea of red roofs with its white façade. It was built in the 11th century and has been extended several times since then. Fancy a special view? After climbing the 193 steps, you have a view over the whole of Constance from the 78 metre high central tower.
Council
When Constance is mentioned, many people immediately think of the Council. Over the centuries, the building on the harbour has been used as a place of trade and even served as the place where the Pope was elected in the Middle Ages. In the 19th century, it was briefly used as a railway siding before being converted into a restaurant in the 20th century.
Ring wall
Although the ring wall only exists today in the form of three towers, it is an important part of Constance's history. The Rhine Gate Tower was used as the northern entrance and today sits enthroned on the banks of the Rhine as an imposing medieval structure.
Lake Constance
What would Constance be without its lakeside scenery? A walk along Lake Constance followed by a boat trip is the perfect start to your stag party. Don't forget: Take a photo of the Imperia. This is a statue of a woman with a jester's cap who polemicised against the Council of Constance.
