Info about St. Gallen
St. Gallen's famous baroque cathedral contains over 170,000 documents, some of which are over a thousand years old. Here are the treasures and sights of a city that is famous for its love of history and proximity to Lake Constance.
Old town of St. Gallen
The city centre of St. Gallen has a few surprises in store for you: Baroque façades and bay windows adorn the alleyways and streets here. Some of the most impressive examples can be found in Spisergasse and Kugelgasse. St. Gallen, which once flourished as a city of textile manufacturers, is now the economic centre of Eastern Switzerland.
Prince Abbey of St. Gall and collegiate church
The Prince Abbey of St. Gallen has its origins in the 8th century and was one of the most important intellectual centres in Europe for centuries until the abbey was dissolved in 1805. Today's buildings are an ensemble of several architectural styles, including baroque, late baroque and rococo. The abbey has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983.
To the west of the complex is the baroque collegiate church, which is now the town's landmark. It was built between 1755 and 1766. The sombre, biblical ceiling paintings are supported by white, Corinthian columns, while the wall paintings are resplendent in their bright colours. The interior of the cathedral is a work of art for the senses, representing the battle between heaven and hell in Baroque splendour.
Abbey library
The abbey library contains a collection of more than 170,000 works from across the centuries. Impressive pieces include manuscripts by Irish monks as well as numerous non-ecclesiastical works (such as the architectural records on the construction of the abbey). The library was originally founded with the abbey in the 8th century.
Gallusplatz
Gallusplatz is framed by colourfully painted half-timbered houses. The centrepiece of the square is a small fountain with a statue of St Gallus. Relax here on one of the many benches and unwind before turning night into day!
Gallusplatz
If you want to head out into the green after visiting the historic city centre, head towards Drei Weieren. The recreational area is located in the south of the city near St. Georgen. Whether swimming, walking or simply enjoying yourself, you can immerse yourself in nature here.
