Info about naples
With almost 1 million inhabitants, Naples is the third largest city in Italy after Rome and Milan. The capital of the Campania region is the economic and cultural centre of southern Italy. Find out here what you can experience at your JGA in Naples.
Culinary sensation
Naples has a lot to offer, especially in culinary terms. Pizza is said to have been invented in Naples, although Neapolitan pizza has a much thicker, slightly flared crust than Roman pizza, for example. Together with pasta, pizza is considered the city's most important dish. In Naples, pizza margherita and pizza fritta are particularly popular and, together with pasta, form the cucina povera - the cuisine of the little people. The pastry speciality here is sfogliatelle, a puff pastry filled with ricotta.
The Napoli Sotteranea
A tour of the city should also include a tour of the Napoli Sotterranea, the underworld of Naples. This underworld is an approximately 80 kilometre-long labyrinth of impressive caves, cisterns and fountains. Around 5000 years ago, the first inhabitants of the Gulf of Naples dug out the yellow tuff, which is an ideal building material. This was later also utilised by the Greeks.
The Romans connected the caves with tunnels and canals and channelled the surrounding water sources into underground chambers using aqueducts. This created a separate cistern for each house. The cistern system was extended until the 19th century.
Vesuvius volcano
About nine kilometres from Naples lies the volcano Vesuvius. It last erupted in 1944. Today, the volcano is easily accessible by public transport. The ascent leads through lava landscapes and offers a good view of the Gulf of Naples at the end.
Certosa di San Martino and the Museum of San Martino
The Certosa di San Martino is a baroque monastery complex with a church on the Vomero hill below the Sant'Elmo fortress. It was built in the 14th century and has been a national monument of Italy since 1866. Among other things, it houses the Museum of San Martino, one of the most important museums in Naples. From the top of the hill you have a good view of the Gulf of Naples and Mount Vesuvius.
