Info about maastricht
A cruise on the Meuse, exploring the city or enjoying nature - Maastricht in the Netherlands is the destination for bon vivants, nature lovers and anyone who wants to experience an unforgettable stag party. The capital in the Dutch province of Limburg is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands. A unique mix of historical sights and cultural attractions awaits you in Maastricht.
Idyllic place Vrijthof
One of the most beautiful places in Maastricht is the Vrijthof, an interesting and idyllic square. In the heart of the Vrijthof is St. John's Church, which stands out from afar because it has a red church tower. If you want a great view of the Vrijthof, you can climb this red church tower and see everything from there. Next to St. John's Church there are also many other historical buildings, such as St. Servatius Church. They remind us of the time when Maastricht was a religious centre and a military fortress town. The surrounding cafés invite you to drink a coffee or a beer, from where you can admire the lively and vibrant Vrijthof.
Basilica of Our Lady and Sightseeing Underground
The oldest monument in the city is the Basilica of Our Lady. It was built as early as the year 1000 and stands near the banks of the Meuse. It is a landmark of Roman architecture and has numerous ecclesiastical artefacts. A special feature of Maastricht is the underground sightseeing tour. Here you discover the different sights not on the street, but under the street. You can explore various places, such as Fort St. Pieter, the Northern Grottos or the Zonneberg Grottos.
Fort St. Pieter
Fort St. Pieter dates from the 17th century and is located on the southern side of the city. Inside you will find loopholes and fountains, and outside the fort offers a beautiful view. The walls in the Northern Grottoes are decorated with illustrations, interesting facts and stories. These grottos lie deep under St Pietersberg and were once used as protection against the French siege. With ceilings up to 10 metres high, the Zonneberg Grottoes give an incredible impression. They were built to provide shelter for around 47,000 Maastricht citizens during the Second World War.
