Info about Innsbruck

Innsbruck is the fifth largest city in Austria and one of the largest Alpine ski resorts in the world. Here are the sights you shouldn't miss on a trip to Innsbruck.

Old Town Innsbruck and Golden Roof

The old town is made up of buildings, some of which are over 500 years old and still shine in their bright colours today. The state of Tyrol has made a special effort to preserve the historic facades, making the "Capital of the Alps" a true centre of history. You can also enjoy Austrian specialities such as Tyrolean bacon dumplings and Viennese "Verlängerte" in the surrounding cafés and restaurants.

The Golden Roof is probably the city's most famous landmark. It is a bay window that was erected in the city centre by Maximilian I in the late 15th century and consists of almost 3,000 gilded copper plates.

Innsbruck Cathedral

Innsbruck Cathedral, with its green domed towers, can be seen from afar and is enthroned as a baroque sacred building in the city centre. The main altar is gilded and framed by a lavish marble interior.

Court Church, Court Garden and Hofburg Palace

A little to the south you will find the Gothic court church from the 15th and 16th centuries. Inside, you can marvel at numerous marble columns and the tomb of Emperor Maximilian I. The tomb is surrounded by 28 statues depicting King Arthur and Leopold III, among others.

If you want to relax after strolling and shopping, head to the Hofgarten. The Hofburg, which is now used as a gallery and museum, is just around the corner.

Nordkettenbahnen and Ambras Castle

Innsbruck's Nordkettenbahnen cable cars take you from the city centre to the heights of the Alps. A journey takes just 20 minutes before you can enjoy the view of the legendary mountain world. Whether you're watching the skiers or toasting with champagne for a stag party, here you can experience Tyrol at its best.

Ambras Castle is located in the southern part of the city and dates back to the heyday of the Renaissance. Several exhibitions on the history of Tyrol await you during your visit.
