Info about graz
The university city of Graz impresses travellers with its colourful city centre and the Schlossberg in the background. Famous personalities like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Erwin Schrödinger once lived here. Which sights should be included in your stag party?
Schlossberg Graz and Clock Tower
The Schlossberg gives Graz that certain something and distinguishes the city from other destinations in Europe, because it is located in the middle of the city centre surrounded by a sea of red roofs. The top can be climbed by lift, the Schlossberg cable car or on foot. And don't miss: the Türkenbrunnen, which reaches 94 m into the depths.
The clock tower is the city's landmark and has towered over the city for centuries. Moreover, the white façade and golden hands can be seen from everywhere in the city centre and offer the perfect JGA photo motif. In 2003, as part of the "European Capital of Culture" title, an identical building painted black was staged as a shadow next to the tower.
Landeszeughaus
The Landeszeughaus displays more than 30,000 weapons and handicraft items that provide an insight into Austria's past. Styria was the scene of several Ottoman attacks, which is why the Schlossberg was also used as a fortification.
Sacred Heart Church and Art House
The Sacred Heart Church is an imposing representative of brick Gothic and is located in the St. Leonhard district. Although the building always leads travellers to believe that it is several centuries old, it was only built at the end of the 19th century. The window rosette that floods the hall with light is impressive.
The Kunsthaus was built in 2003 and has a glass, futuristic bubble as its roof. The exhibitions change every six months and show impressive works of modern art.
Mausoleum of Ferdinand II.
The Mausoleum of Ferdinand II was built in the style of Florentine tombs of the 16th century and was intended to commemorate the emperor's power during the Thirty Years' War. After visiting the nearby Graz Cathedral, you can relax in one of the numerous cafés or restaurants in Sporgasse.
Eggenberg Palace
Slightly west of the city centre, nestled in a spacious garden, lies the baroque Eggenberg Palace. The castle was once the headquarters of the noble Eggenberg family before it was acquired by the province of Styria during the Second World War. Today there is an exhibition of the Universalmuseum Joanneum inside.
